How Google Calendar is turning into a Life-Saving Immunization Reminder in Nigeria

by | Jul 15, 2025 | Project Safe Birth

At Motherhood NG Initiative, we believe that empowering those who care for mothers is the fastest way to transform maternal and child health. In Igando, Lagos, we gathered 30 Faith-Based Birth Attendants for a groundbreaking Train-the-Trainers outreach, equipping them with simple digital skills to better serve pregnant women in their communities.

Teaching Technology for Safer Motherhood

The highlight of this training was introducing Google Calendar as a life-saving immunization reminder. While many attendants already had the app on their phones, most never knew it could be repurposed to set vaccination alerts. Now, every pregnant woman they attend to in their various centers will benefit from this knowledge — ensuring no child misses vital vaccines.

First-of-Its-Kind Innovation in Africa

We are proud to be the first organization in Africa to introduce this innovation — repurposing an everyday tool like Google Calendar to close the gap in immunization reminders. This simple yet powerful approach combines digital literacy with maternal health awareness, showing that technology can be a life-saving tool in the hands of grassroots caregivers.

Small Tools, Big Impact

Every year, over 20 million children miss out on life-saving vaccines worldwide (WHO, 2023). In Nigeria, immunization gaps contribute significantly to preventable child mortality. By training birth attendants on how to leverage technology, we are bridging the gap between traditional maternal support and modern digital solutions.

Multiplying Safe Births and Healthy Babies

Faith-Based Birth Attendants play a vital role in grassroots communities, especially where access to formal healthcare is limited. By training 30 attendants, we are creating a ripple effect — each one will pass on these skills to dozens of mothers, amplifying safe births and healthier children across Lagos.

A Movement for Change

This initiative proves that small tools can make a big difference. When we equip community caregivers with knowledge, we multiply impact and build a future where every mother and child thrives.

Together, we are showing that the power of technology + community care = healthier generations.
